Internship – Quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing

DESCRIPTION OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROJECT

The intern will join the theory group of HK Ng to work on quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing, the only known route to large-scale useful quantum computers. Possible projects can include the following topics: (1) theoretical exploration of error correction and fault tolerance ideas, (2) development of proposals for implementing error correction components in real experiments, and/or (3) estimating physical resource costs of fault-tolerant quantum computing. The group works closely with experimental collaborators on superconducting systems and on silicon spin systems.

METHODS AND TECHNIQUES

Analytical and numerical calculations. The candidate will learn about the state-of-the-art approaches in quantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing.

APPLICANT SKILLS/ REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A physics background (e.g., undergraduate physics degree) is expected

  • Strong mathematical ability

  • Programming in Python (or similar languages)

  • Willingness to work with experimental counterparts (for topics 2 & 3)

  • Prior exposure to quantum computing will be a strong plus point
